Thank you!
Is it really December already? Where did the year go? They say "time flies when you are having fun", and I do acknowledge that 2016 has been a great year!
I would like to say "Thank you!" to all of you. Thank you for the prayers for the men, board, and the staff. Thank you for the donations of clothes, food, furniture, gift cards, and the numerous other items. Thank you for your show of support by having us come to speak in your churches and other events. Thank you for the words of encouragement, which especially means a great deal. And thank you for your financial support. Without this, we could not have walked alongside the men that we have been blessed to know.
In the first 11 months of 2016 we have had 26 men transition out of the "The Carpenter's Shop" (the housing portion of Kingdom Boundaries Prison Aftercare) and we have had 26 men move in. We have had men move into their own apartments and we were also blessed to participate in the wedding of one of the men. There were also those men that struggled and made unwise choices. Thus, they will be spending more time incarcerated. But even through their struggles, I believe that your generosity has affected them in a positive way. They all were exposed to God's word.
"It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it" Isa. 55:11 NLT
Again, thank you for all your support in 2016. We also ask if you would remember Kingdom Boundaries in 2017 and beyond.

"For every Problem, God provides a Solution."
The Carpenter's Shop (the housing portion of Kingdom Boundaries) has continued to stay full. We also have applications from men wanting to become part of the program which exceeds our available bed space. Faced with this dilemma, the staff and board are left with two options. We can stay the size we are, or expand. The decision was made to expand after we were approached with an offer to lease, with the option to buy, the apartment building next to our current location. This would expand our capacity from 9 men to 20.
With this amazing opportunity also comes financial commitments. Kingdom Boundaries has been blessed with a couple who have put up a $25,000 matching grant to be met by the end of 2016. (We need your help soon!!) This same couple has put up another $25,000 matching grant to be met after the 1st of the year. A second couple has pledged an additional $50,000 as a matching grant, also after the 1st of the year. What a tremendous opportunity for us and our ministry partners!!

A testimonial by Mark, a KBPA beneficiary
By the love of our heavenly Father and the grace of Jesus Christ dying on the cross for our sins, I am a new man.
I have known Jeff Haverhals for 5 years. I met Jeff when I was in prison. I attended his Bible study and he also mentored me one-on-one. Jeff and I have shared what I call Spirit tears. What that means is that God has used Jeff and the Holy Spirit to touch the lives of meek, brokenhearted, and the lost sheep. This is where the Spirit tears come in to play. When the Holy Spirit touched me, that is when these glorious tears fell from my eyes.
When I was ready to get out of prison, Kingdom Boundaries is where I wanted to get my new start. The reason why is plain and simple. It is where I know Christ was going to dwell. The love and support that the staff and board has given Jeff to give to us is a great blessing from the Lord.
This is my testimony, that I know that Jesus Christ is my redeemer and that he dwells in each and every one of us. And that my personal walk or relationship with God is the most important thing in my life.
I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!

Is it worth it?
There are days I have to admit that I wonder if it all worth it. The time and effort to meet all the challenges of walking alongside these men. The challenges are many and the devil will gladly add fuel to the fire of doubt, and then fan the flames. He says loudly on some days, "Is it worth it? These men don't care!" This of course is a lie. The devil is the master liar and he couldn't tell the truth if he tried.
Then I think of Jesus. When they pulled out His beard, spit in His face, pounded that thorny crown on His head, whipped Him and then drove nails through His flesh, was the devil yelling in Jesus' ear "Are they worth it? You know they are not going to appreciate it, think they don't need it, and reject it. Is it worth it? Are they worth it?'' Because of His love for us and out of obedience to His Father, Jesus said yes!
Are these men and women that have committed a crime worthy of incarceration worth it? I know what Jesus would say. I know what Jesus did. He told the devil: "Yes they are! I created them in the image and likeness of myself and I love them and wish that none would perish."
So is it worth it? Are these men and women worth it? ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!!

2nd Annual Banquet Highlights!
Our 2nd annual Kingdom Boundaries banquet is in the books, and it was a great night! Men who had previously been incarcerated commented on how good it was to see those that had come and visited them while they were in prison.
We were entertained by the wonderful music of Larry Olson and Karol Baer of Dakota Road Music. (Thank you Larry and Karol. You did an awesome job as always.)
Alex and Lowell, current residents of the "The Carpenter Shop - the housing portion of KBPA" and Kelly, a former resident, gave their testimonies and said a BIG thank you to all that support KBPA. We were also blessed with a song that was written and sung by Mark, another resident of "The Carpenter Shop".
The delicious meal was provided by the board of KBPA. Homemade bread was provided by Kevin and Ranee and the homemade fry bread was provided by Kelly.
The staff, board, and the residents at KBPA say a "great big" thank you to all that supported this evening by your donation of auction items, your willingness to financially support KBPA, your gift of being our guests, and by your prayers.

I'm writing this letter to thank you for the support and knowledge I received from attending the Wednesday night Bible study at the Kingdom Boundaries house. I was fortunate enough to parole to my own apartment when I was released from prison. The Kingdom Boundaries house was just around the corner from where I lived so I was grateful you had the Wednesday Bible study so I could stay in touch with other men that I had met in prison and to help me stay on the right path.
The better understanding of the Bible and the comradely of the men there were crucial in my efforts to do the right things and keep me focused on God and His plan for me in this world. I highly recommend to anyone needing support and a place you can feel welcome and expand your spiritual knowledge to attend the Bible study and gain the confidence and knowledge to make it outside the walls of prison. Again, I want to thank all the men for making me feel welcome and I contribute a lot of my success outside the walls to your support.

KBPA Financial Needs
First of all, we want to say, "Thank You" to all the individuals that have partnered with Kingdom Boundaries to this point! You have blessed and helped bring to fruition this Ministry of aftercare, and made it possible to continue.
We look back about 18 months ago when we started with a little or nothing, having a vision to help guys getting out of prison, but no real place to do it effectively. Now, due to your contributions we find this ministry secure and in a beautiful building! We are fully furnished and have completed several upgrades including, flooring, paint, 2 new furnaces, new storm windows throughout, and lots of elbow grease and cleaning just to name a few of them.
Currently we are setting in a good place regarding the facility and needed upgrades, and thanks to KNWC for choosing us to be the "hands and feet" project for April, the needs for the guys such as toiletries, razors, socks and underwear, towels etc. is also setting at a good level.
Our greatest need to date are finances. Finances to meet our day to day/month to month expenses. Expenses such as, various required insurances (you can about imagine), utilities, staffing, office supplies, and facility maintenance are just a few of our concerns moving forward.
While we realize these are not the "feel good" things to support, they are vital as KBPA continues to walk alongside of these men, and strive to show them a better way, Jesus' way!

The Witness of Our Actions
The following story is not mine, but one I had received in an email several years ago. Many of you may have read this, but its words serve as a reminder of how important it is to "Walk the Walk, and just not Talk the Talk." It is worthy of being read again or for the first time. "Several years ago, a preacher from out-of-state accepted a call to a church in Houston, Texas. Some weeks after he arrived, he had an occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change.
As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, 'You'd better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it.' Then he thought, 'Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount?' Anyway, the bus company gets too much fare; 'they will never miss it. Accept it as a 'gift from God' and keep quiet.'
When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, and then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, 'Here, you gave me too much change'
The driver, with a smile, replied, 'Aren't you the new preacher in town?'
'Yes' he replied.
'Well, I have been thinking a lot lately about going somewhere to worship. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I'll see you at church on Sunday.'
When the preacher stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, 'Oh God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter.'
Our lives are the only Bible some people will ever read. This is a really scary example of how much people watch us as Christians, and will put us to the test! Always be on guard - and remember - you carry the name of Christ on your shoulders when you call yourself 'Christian'.

This story came back to me after meeting a refugee from Iraq. For this story I will call him Ben. Ben had worked for the US government in Iraq and after the military scaled back their forces in Iraq, Ben was forced to flee his homeland and come to the United States.
I was contacted by another agency and was asked if Ben could use a computer for some research he needed to get done. I said that would not be a problem and the next day Ben arrived. After a short period of introductions Ben asked what we do here at The Carpenter's Shop.
This opened the door for me to tell him that we are a Christian ministry that helps those getting released from prison a helping hand "up" as they transition back into society. This also gave me an opportunity to ask him about his faith. Ben told me he grew up Muslim and that it is all he ever knew. He also shared how dangerous it would have been for him if he would have pursued another faith, but he had questions.
This gave me the opportunity to share with him the truth of Jesus Christ. I was able to tell him that Jesus is both God and man at the same time and how we have to believe this by faith. I told him that Jesus loved him so much that Jesus died for him. When I told him Jesus loved him he got a huge smile and his face glowed with happiness.
When Ben got ready to leave he said this, ''there are two things Christians have that Muslims don't: joy and peace." This brought joy to my heart, but it also made me wonder and challenges me, "what do others see when they see me?"
I heard this on the radio some time ago and I believe it to be so very true. "Faith it is more caught than taught."

Mentoring Opportunities at "The Carpenters Shop"

We recently discovered an easy and very effective way to join the mentoring team at KBPA. We have volunteers come in one time per week, (preferably after supper) for a couple hours to just hang out and visit with some of the guys. There is no set individual or topic, just drink some coffee and visit. This is a very relaxed and effective setting to get to know some of the residents and to speak into their lives. This has been a blessing to the individuals, just to know someone is around to talk to after staff has gone home. Looking for a great opportunity to visit with, as well as mentor these guys and be blessed in the process? This may be for you!
Another mentoring opportunity we are currently exploring, is regarding weekend activities. For these guys, as the weeks are often quite busy, when the weekend comes there is not a whole lot going on. We are looking for individuals that would be able to take a few of the guys out to a local lake, such as Alvin, Lakota, Wall, or Vermillion and fish for a few hours. This could be by boat or shore, the point is just get out with a Christian brother and enjoy the outdoors. We would love to hear any other ideas regarding weekend activities if you have them.
Please prayerfully consider these opportunities to join with KBPA in walking along side these men, and showing them Jesus' love. Call anytime with questions or comments regarding mentoring.

Kingdom Boundaries has meant a great deal to me in my transition. RiseFest is a family friendly Christian music festival
that happens every Father's Day weekend.
A few of the performers this year are: Chris Tomlin, the Newsboys, Chrowder, Building 429, and Mondisa.

Kingdom Boundaries Prison Aftercare will be making a short presentation at RiseFest at 1:30 pm on Saturday, June 18th between music performances. Jeff Haverhals, the director of Kingdom Boundaries in Sioux Falls, will share how different prison ministries collaborate to work with the inmates while incarcerated, and how Kingdom Boundaries supports and mentors inmates both inside and outside the prison walls.
