A Kingdom Boundaries Testimonial
Kingdom Boundaries is an essential part of my recovery and reentry into society. The director Pastor Jeff, his wife Rhonda, board members, as well as my fellow residents have and continue to walk alongside me during my transition. They do this by providing me with friendship, support, and rides to appointments, work, as well as shopping. Having help for these seemingly small things is a huge blessing to me.
I am not from Sioux Falls originally, and to be in an unfamiliar environment with no family or friends nearby was a concerning prospect when I got out. I didn't know how I was going to do so far from home and my family. Kingdom Boundaries has been a massive help in this respect, because they are my family here locally. I really am grateful for the acceptance and love I have been shown.
I truly appreciate all that Kingdom Boundaries has provided for me. This includes Christian fellowship, friendships, and a safe place where I feel like I belong. The staff and volunteers truly are the hands and feet of Jesus. They are self-sacrificing, patient, and loving. I shudder at the thought of being anywhere else. It is so difficult to go from being institutionalized from 10 years of incarceration to functioning in society as a normal citizen. Kingdom Boundaries has given me hope and brought me peace during my transition.
At the close of another year, I pray that Kingdom Boundaries Prison Aftercare will continue to walk alongside and be a blessing to others, as it has to me.

Growth & Change
An old comment I hear occasionally is "another day another dollar". This refers to the idea that everything is ordinary, nothing has changed, and that everything remains the same. Well, this not been the case for Kingdom Boundaries Prison Aftercare. This past year has been another year of growth and change.
In December of 2016 KBPA was negotiating the purchase of a second ministry location right next door to "The Carpenter's Shop". In January of this year KBPA was able to take possession of the apartment building next door. The building needed only cosmetic upgrades and we were able to start placing men in this second location, "The Master's House", in early 2017. This increased the number of beds to 20 and by December all the beds were occupied.
2017 was also a year that brought about a staff change for KBPA. After three years of faithful service Bruce Oliver has moved on to pursue other ministry opportunities. Bruce wore many hats and was a great asset to us. Not only was Bruce a spiritual mentor to the men and a fervent prayer warrior, he was also the handy man. Bruce ran wires for the cameras and door system, repaired plumbing and electrical problems, and was there for anything he was asked to do. Bruce has been, and will continue to be, missed by the staff and men at KBPA. Thanks Bruce for all you have done and blessings for the future.
To fill the void, Mark Van Der Brink has been hired since Bruce's departure. Mark is a seminary student at Sioux Falls Seminary and a resident of Sioux Falls. Mark and his wife Lisa also have a love for God and those that are incarcerated. Recently both Mark and Lisa attended an "At the Well" weekend at the women's penitentiary in Pierre. This confirmed their desire to work with men and women as they leave incarceration. (More on Mark in the future.)

They are great people. At the time I had no place to live, so my friend William talked to Pastor Jeff about my situation.
With the grace of God, Jeff had a spot for me and told me that I could live here until I found a place in Miami, Florida. I want to move to Miami because that is where my family lives.
I want to say that I am so grateful for God and Kingdom Boundaries. They do not forget about us and help us no matter what our situation is. They provide shelter, food, and clothing, but the most important thing is we are blessed from God and Kingdom Boundaries. With the banquet only a short week away, a question that might be asked, "Why should we help another non-profit group?"
God has given Kingdom Boundaries a platform to come alongside a portion of society that frankly most of society would just as soon forget about. I grew up in a time when I heard often "Throw them in jail and throw away the key." God is a God of mercy and has a desire for all people to hear of his great love for them, and learn about His grace that is extended to all who hear and believe. 1Timothy 2:4 says: "who desires all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth."
The prison churches do a great job of telling of the Good News that is available to all. Romans 10:14 NLT "But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?"
God has called Kingdom Boundaries to continue to walk beside men as they leave incarceration and reenter society.

"Without Kingdom Boundaries these guys getting out of prison would not have a safe place to live. They would also be subject to bad/old influences. They would not have the accountability that Kingdom Boundaries provides. And most of all and most important, they would not have the spiritual assistance that comes from a faith based house. A house that is full of brothers in Christ that can help each other in times of stress, temptation, illness and other struggles that may arise. A house that brings Christ first and foremost in all aspects"

It is not uncommon to hear on the evening news of a crime that was committed and the person committing the crime was on parole. This, sadly, is often the case. But there are other stories that are good, that don't make the evening news or the paper.
Jesse, a resident of "The Master's House", KBPA's second location, works for a local painting company. While at work Jesse found out that there was a house that was in need of scraping before it could be painted. While talking with Carol, the owner of this home, Jesse learned that she could not afford to have the house professionally scraped. (Prior to this the men at KBPA had been discussing doing a "servant" project.) When Jesse suggested scraping this house to the men, they gladly volunteered. So, on a beautiful Saturday morning, a group of men along with two other individuals showed up at Carol's.
They spent the morning scraping, power washing, and cleaning up the mess.
The following is a letter Jesse wrote for this article.
"I just want to thank all the men from Kingdom Boundaries who took time to go and help Carol. The opportunity was presented to me after talking with Carol about doing some painting and scraping on her house. The men from KB were more than willing to serve in this situation. I would also like to thank Doug and Lisa Ver Mulm for making KB shirts for all the guys, and to Jeff and Rhonda Haverhals for encouraging all the men. And ultimately, I want to thank our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for all the abilities and talents that He has blessed each man here at KB with. Jesse

I have made a lot of huge mistakes in my life and I was going nowhere but down. Like many men about to be released from prison, I had no real clue what I was going to do. There wasn't an ounce of hope left in me to get my life on-track.
That is when KBPA graciously accepted me into their program and gave me a new lease on life. Everybody here is filled with a joy that I cannot explain except to say that they have found Jesus and brought Him into their lives.
This place is truly filled with a group of sober people who honestly want to help you find Jesus and live your life the way God intended. They have walked the same path you have walked and came from the same places you have come from. They prove that it is never too late to change.
I can no longer say that I must do this alone, because I now have Jesus and all the people at KBPA to walk alongside me.
Thank you, Pastor Jeff, Rhonda, Bruce, and all the men at KBPA for your support.

On Saturday afternoon, July 29, KBPA celebrated 4 years of ministry. In September of 2013 Kingdom Boundaries Prison Aftercare had its first board meeting. At that time it was decided to investigate ways to help men exiting from prison as they re-entered society. Since then, God has provided KBPA with 2 apartment buildings with the capability of offering 20 men safe affordable transitional housing.
God blessed KBPA and it guests with beautiful weather, great food, excellent music, great testimonies, and Christian fellowship. It also became a mini reunion of sorts. Men that had been released had a chance to meet with men and women that they had gotten to know while incarcerated at worship services and at weekend retreats like REC (Residents Encounter Christ), BIB (Brothers in Blue), and Faith Fellowship. These are faith based spiritual weekends held inside the walls of prison.
At the end of the evening while Dakota Road was singing "God is here" He said, "yes, I am". We not only felt His presence. He also confirmed it. In the sky to the west of this celebration, side by side was a rainbow and a cross. Both reminders of covenants God has made with us.

Come celebrate with us!
Kingdom Boundaries Prison Aftercare is celebrating 4 years of ministry on Saturday, July 29th, from 4 - 8pm. We will have this festival at the New Day Church, 27365 472nd Ave, Harrisburg, SD.
Rachelle Hope will kick off the evening at 4:00pm. Dinner will be served from 5:00 - 7:00pm with the meat provided by the Sioux County Pork Producers.
Also, from 5:00 - 7:00pm there will be testimonials and entertainment by individuals that have previously been incarcerated. They will share what it has meant to them personally when they had a safe environment to reenter society. Larry Olson & the Dakota Road Band will round out the evening from 7:00 - 8:00pm.
God has truly blessed Kingdom Boundaries and opened many doors for us to go through. Please come to celebrate with staff, the board of directors, volunteers, present and past KBPA residents the great things He has done. To God be the Glory!!!!!!!!

Kingdom Boundaries' website kingdomboundaries.org has been given a facelift. It is all new with many new pages that have a lot of information. There are the standard "About Us", "Get Involved, and "Contact Us" tabs. There are also new tabs that contain "Testimonies", "Archive (articles)", and "Photos/Videos". Lastly there is a "Links" tab to check out other like minded ministries.
In with these tabs are "Donate Now" buttons. This ministry, like many others, rely on the generous donations of men and women like yourselves.

Father's Day
My family gets together several times a year. My brother and sisters take turns hosting a meal where the whole family is invited to attend. Father's Day is one of these days and it is on this day that Rhonda and I are blessed to have the family over. As I was thinking about devotions before we feasted on barbequed pork and several thousand other calories, Proverbs 22:6 kept coming to mind. "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." (The more I meet and talk with men that are or have been incarcerated, the more appreciative I am of my parents and the "work and church" environment I grew up in.)
It is not at all uncommon to talk with individuals that grew up in unhealthy environments where the father was either absent, abusive, or abusing alcohol or drugs. And many times, these fathers were only treating their kids the way they were treated by their fathers.
Not all men in prison grew up in broken homes, and not all kids in broken homes will end up in prison, but it is true in many situations. I, along with all fathers, need to remember that faith is more caught than taught. Our kids are watching.
Please continue to pray for those incarcerated and the children of the incarcerated.

Update on the Master’s House
Recently I have been asked about the Master's House (the second residential building of KBPA). Here is an update. The Master's House has 6 units in the building: 5 of them are 2 two bedroom apartments and the other one is a one bedroom apartment. Currently 4 of the double units are being lived in by residents. This week we furnished the 5th unit so two guys can move in next week. At the end of June, we will be working on the 6th unit so it is ready for guys to move into. I want to thank everyone that graciously donated furniture and items for these apartments!!
I also would ask everyone for prayers of discernment for us. We have 9 guys going up for parole in June, so we need to decide which guys will be a good fit for the Kingdom Boundaries Prison Aftercare program. And along with this, we need to decide which guys we are going to move from the Carpenter's Shop into the Master's House. It has been a busy month already as we have had 3 guys that have moved into their own apartments.

Grace vs Justice

Monday, May 1st, was another wonderful ‘’day that the Lord has made.’’ I was awakened to see how God graciously provided a generous covering of nitrogen for my lawn in the form of snow. Other than the snow it was a pretty normal Monday morning. After I dropped Ryan off at school, I headed to the office. This is when I was reminded that Satan doesn’t take Sundays off. I received an anonymous tip that a “rig” syringe and needle used for injecting meth had fallen out of a current resident’s pocket. Two men had urine analysis’ (UA) done and both men tested positive for meth. Their parole officer’s were contacted and both individuals were detained and were temporarily sent back to prison.
Now the question is: extend “grace” and allow the men to come back, or remove them from the program “justice”? This is always a hard question to answer. I want to show grace and give them a second chance, but also, I don’t want to enable bad behavior. It was decided to let the other residents help us make that decision.
We were very proud of the way the men discussed the different options. They quoted Bible verses like Ecclesiastes 4:10 and other verses. The men talked about coming along side each other with encouragement and accountability. Also, the men were individually torn as to what the best option would be. They are very concerned about the integrity of the program and for their own sobriety. After discussing different possibilities, it was decided that they would agree to have the men come back if they would agree to several conditions. A few of the conditions were that these two men would have tighter curfews, could not have contact with their old friends, they would need regular UA testing, and would attend Celebrate Recovery. The other residents also agreed that they would hold the two men accountable and would not look the other direction if the two were not living up to their agreement.
The road to recovery is long and hard and filled with pot holes. The devil is always trying to cause chaos and division, but God again took what the devil meant for harm and turned it into good. I believe this incident strengthened the resolve of the men to come along side each other and give a hand up when others are struggling. To God be the glory!

When I got out of prison I had nowhere to go, no one who wanted me in their homes, no friends, and no money. All I knew was that I was going to have to live at the homeless shelter and that my three pairs of jeans, three shirts, socks, coat, and shoes had been sent out from prison to Pastor Jeff at Kingdom Boundaries. Walking through single digit weather with a heavy wind is not fun and even less so with prison clothes. The weight of change and the scariness of the turbo charged world had me shaking already. I was afraid. I was alone.
Only, I wasn't alone at all. Our Heavenly Father - God Almighty - was with me, guiding me, urging me forward to get the only belongings I had left after almost 12 years of going in and out of prison, losing friends and family along the way. I wanted my coat. I didn't steal it. I didn't steal my jeans, I didn't steal my shirt or hat or gloves. They were mine. They had new meaning to me. In fact, the value of a hard-earned dollar was freshly imprinted upon my mind and heart. I didn't want to lose what little I had because I didn't want to steal again and I knew if I didn't have them I would more than likely steal because I had no money. Old habits die hard.
Little did I know God was taking better care of me than I could ever do myself. Kingdom Boundaries opened the door for me and welcomed me in with immediate loving arms and a hot cup of coffee. Before I knew it, I had a bed and a place to live. At least for a week, they said. During my stay I was fed, encouraged, prayed for, made to feel wanted, and provided for. They helped me enter an overwhelmingly scary world that runs at full pace with its attention focused solely on their phones arguing with others over Facebook. The world had grown cold and isolated itself. People didn't talk to people or want to help anyone. They only care for themselves. I saw this immediately.
Kingdom Boundaries enabled me to curl up into a ball when I felt overwhelmed and read my bible and talk to God. I didn't have to worry about my necessities so I could focus on my walk with God. I could go into my closet, shut the door, and pray to the Father who sees in secret. Not knowing what to pray for I let the Spirit do the praying and boy did God start moving. Two weeks after I arrived there I was heading home to my ex-wife and two kids who were out of my life due to my self-centered lifestyle.
Pastor Jeff counseled me and talked me through many issues regarding my addiction to drugs, my indulgence to sin, and my restoration to my wife. He took the time, late in the evening when most people are at home with their families or out doing their own thing, to ask me about my day and to give guidance and direction where needed. He cared for me. A total stranger. But he did that with all the men. 9 total. It takes a lot of patience and love to make each person feel individually important. I don't know how he does it. Sacrificing himself for the people the world wants thrown out on the curb. Jeff is taking a chance on thieves and liars and drug users, hoping to make a change on someone, one person at a time.
My wife picked me up on Saturday having no money for gas or food; her bank account was negative $900, she hadn't paid January rent or electric for the past two months, was $1,500 behind on our 4-year-old daughters day care and had bill collectors garnishing her wages. She risked coming to Sioux Falls from Aberdeen with one tank of gas and not being able to get home. Pastor Jeff - probably with a nudge from God - offered to fill up our tank. And then offered to be there for me if I ever needed anyone to talk to.
I thank God every day for Kingdom Boundaries. They are great people of God there. I pray God will bless them mightily.

On February 3rd, 2017, KBPA was honored to join the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce. After the ribbon cutting, lunch was served. We were blessed to meet many of the Chamber members who showed much interest in our ministry. Before leaving, many of the Chamber members took a tour of "The Carpenter's Shop."
A friend is the first person who comes in when the whole world has gone out.

Philippians 2:3-8 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death-even death on a cross! Servanthood requires a mental shift, a change in your attitudes. God is always more interested in why we do something than in what we do. Attitudes count more than achievements!
REAL SERVANTS ARE SELF-FORGETFUL
They focus on others, not on themselves. This is true humility: not thinking less of ourselves, but thinking of ourselves less. Paul said to forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. This is what it means to "lose your life" - forgetting yourself in service to others. When we stop focusing on our needs, we become aware of the needs around us.
Thinking like a servant is difficult because it challenges the basic problem of my life: I am, by nature, selfish. I think most about me. That's why humility is a daily struggle, a lesson I must relearn over and over. The opportunity to be a servant confronts me dozens of times a day where I'm given the choice to decide between meeting my needs or the needs of others. Self-denial is the core of servanthood.
REAL SERVANTS THINK LIKE STEWARDS, NOT OWNERS
God owns it all. To be a real servant, we must settle the issue of money in our lives. Are we servants to money or to God? We cannot serve both. If we choose to serve God, he will bless us with the money and resources we need to be stewards of his works here on earth.

"The Master's House"
"The Master's House", stage two of the housing portion of Kingdom Boundaries, is literally 10 feet from "The Carpenter's Shop". This location made it an ideal for a second facility. With the proximity, we could incorporate and tie it into our current security equipment. With an upgrade to the camera and door system we could install cameras into the hallways and have the exterior doors operate with the same "fob" system we utilize at The Carpenter's Shop. This was made possible with the hard work of Bruce and a few men residing at these locations. The men dug through the frozen ground and through a side walk to connect the two buildings with an underground pipe. This made an access point for the many wires that were needed to go between the buildings.
"The Master's House" will be used as a "next step" for men residing at The Carpenter's Shop. This new facility will be for men that are making the adjustment back into society. These men have proven themselves, but are not quite yet ready to go completely on their own or are having trouble finding adequate housing. Now KBPA can offer these men a safe place that has less structure, and is affordable as they continue their journey back into society.
At this time we have three men that have lived at The Carpenter's Shop living at "The Master's House". Also, William, an international student from Liberia, who is a student at Sioux Falls Seminary, is also residing at "The Master's House". William is a great addition to KBPA and will help with Bible Studies and become a friend and supporter to the others living at the two facilities.

My name is Robert Herron, 57 years old. I've been with Kingdom Boundaries since October 3rd 2016.
Here's my story. I did 17 ½ years in prison. That's what it took for me to find Jesus. I consider prison to be a blessing.
I met Pastor Jeff while doing time in Springfield which is how I came to find out about Kingdom Boundaries. I was nearing the end of my time and I was literally scared to death. Everything had changed after I got locked up in 1998. I had nowhere to go, no job, and no transportation.
I applied for Kingdom Boundaries with Pastor Jeff and was accepted. Kingdom Boundaries was a "God-send". On October 3rd, my son picked me up in Springfield and brought me to the "Carpenter's Shop" in Sioux Falls where Kingdom Boundaries has housed me in an apartment with two other ex-inmates. Kingdom Boundaries gave me clothes, toiletries, and a bed to sleep in. During my stay, I found employment with the "Kingdom Boundaries" president. Another God-send.
Kingdom Boundaries gives ex-inmates a place to stay, a place to sleep, and good advice. They help us get back on our feet and back into society. They've even transitioned me into their new building next door. Now I have a two-bedroom apartment with another ex-inmate. I have a home!

Here's my story. I did 17 ½ years in prison. That's what it took for me to find Jesus. I consider prison to be a blessing.
I met Pastor Jeff while doing time in Springfield which is how I came to find out about Kingdom Boundaries. I was nearing the end of my time and I was literally scared to death. Everything had changed after I got locked up in 1998. I had nowhere to go, no job, and no transportation.

"God gets the Glory"
As I sit down and ponder the best way to say THANK YOU and bring you an update, an old hymn keeps coming to mind. "To God be the Glory, great things He has done!" Also, "How God makes a way when there seems to be no way." Philippians 2:13-14
In the fall of 2015 we contacted the owner, Tim, of the apartment building adjacent to "The Carpenter's Shop", the housing portion of Kingdom Boundaries. We were wondering if Tim would be willing to sell the property. He said he wasn't interested in selling and we left it at that. A year later it was suggested that we contact Tim once more. When Tim was asked if he wanted to sell now, he said "yes." On January 5th 2017, Kingdom Boundaries closed on the 6-plex just to the north of The Carpenter's Shop. We have named this new property "The Master's House". It will be used as the next step for the men living at The Carpenter's Shop. As men come to The Carpenter's Shop and are working and moving forward in their transition into society, "The Master's House" will be the next phase in helping them make this transition by giving the men more freedom and responsibility.
So, THANK YOU to all of you that have supported Kingdom Boundaries with your prayers and have trusted us with your valuable resources. The men, the staff, and the board of KBPA have been truly blessed by your generosity.
